About

Steve Gartsky Architect
Approach

To successfully resolve a design challenge a thorough understanding of the problem is so important. An informed appreciation of the site, project budget and a client’s wishes are crucial in guiding my design process. I place a heavy emphasis on learning the background of a new project and then critically thinking through design options to find the perfect solution.

It is a long collaborative journey a client has with their architect; therefore, in practicing my craft listening and clear communication are key. Whilst I may guide the design, I have found that my clients contribute fantastic ideas that I am keen to foster into our scheme. It not only improves the quality of the built outcome but gives clients ownership of the final design outcome.

Finally,  I believe that good architecture has to have something special, that brings joy, and elevates it above the ordinary. I enjoy collaborating with my clients to discover and create those special elements.

About Me

In 2018, I started my own practice based in Stanmore and servicing the inner west of Sydney. Specialising in residential and mixed use architecture. I am currently working on a terrace house addition for a young family and a new rooftop addition, both in Stanmore. You can view these projects on this site.

I have spent many years of my career working for the highly regarded architectural firm Fender Katsalidis. I honed my skills working on a collection of projects of differing scales, types and complexity. A highlight of my time there includes the recently completed mixed use building Tempo in Drummoyne where I was the project architect. I had also worked on The Herald apartment building in Newcastle,  Levantine Hill Winery in the Yarra Valley and the AIA national award winning Garangula Art Gallery in regional NSW. I concluded my time with Fender Katsalidis as an Associate in 2017.

I commenced work on my first private project in 2009. The Terrigal residence was a fantastic early opportunity to not only design my first building but to also be part of the construction team as well. Construction on that project commenced immediately after the completion of my Master of Architecture degree from the University of Newcastle.
